I am not surprised about CX move, especially number of Asian airlines have converted to piece system. ANA, JAL and even Hong Kong Airlines are all using "piece" system on all their flights. CX seems to be using the system that ANA is using, except Premium economy. ANA is very stingy with PE passengers - only one piece of free baggage allowance for PE passengers, but I have a feeling that this will be changed eventually. JAL and HX are more generous - two for Y, and three for F/J.
Well I agree that from TPAC position, economy passengers will be heavily affected by this new proposal. But then it is getting more in line with other airlines, and if CX will offer a decent second piece charge, it will be okay.
However if you are traveling at other parts of the world, this new rule will increase baggage allowance for everyone, except Y. Y has 20kg/44lbs now, and the new allowance of 23kg/50lbs will be nice. For non-TPAC passengers, PE passengers will get a nice increase. F and J also get some increased baggage allowance too on non-TPAC flights.
The only thing that I wish CX can do is to give F and J passengers three pieces of check-in baggage allowance. American Airlines, British Airways (except intra European J, which is two), Iberia, and Japan Airlines are currently offering three pieces of check-in baggages, and I think CX can match it, too. Even HK Airlines (HX) is allowing three pieces of check-in baggages for J passengers.
I don't even mind if the weight is unified at 23kg/52lbs.
Y: 1 piece (Hopefully the 2nd piece will be charged fairly - 40USD short haul/50USD medium haul/60USD long haul - sound pretty standard).
PE: 2 piece
F/J: 3 piece
OW Sapphire and Emerald - 1 extra piece.
I can live with this arrangement. Ideally and hopefully all the OW (and other alliance) members can eventually settle on a common baggage allowance system (and extra baggage charges), that will make everyone lives much easier.
