Ditto. Regardless of chain, I email the hotel directly (not relying on SPG Plat Concierge of my Hyatt Private Line agent) and tell them I will be arriving after midnight.). I also call the day of arrival, well, the day prior to arrival.
Call it pedantic but it always works.
IMO, it's the phone call just before you arrive that is when your late check in is noted and pretty much guaranteed.
