I'll be traveling a lot to Africa in the next year too, but for leisure more than work. My advice would be to focus on Star Alliance, which has three African members (EgyptAir, Ethiopian, and South African) and credit your mileage towards United. It's worth noting that Ethiopian and South African both fly to IAD from their hubs, and United has a nice Houston-Lagos flight on their 787, so that should be helpful.
