Short of giving these away to a stranger, is there any option that I'm missing that I'm not aware of???
Don't sell them, not worth the risk. Charity, stranger, random person in line at the airport in front of you (yes, I did that once)... I'm sure there are FT readers that would be thrilled by the opportunity.

This gives me a question I'm sure someone here can answer, though. If OP booked a changeable ticket today for January, confirmed his upgrade, and then rescheduled for 12 months from now, would he be able to keep the upgrade if R space is available on his new future flight, or would the GPUs go <poof!> at their original expiration date?

Have they expired yet, or are they going to expire? There are lots of threads about how to keep the miles alive through a single song on iTunes or sending your spouse flowers through the UA online store and earning a few miles. For a couple of bucks, I would keep them alive. Or, at least give them to charity if you really are going to let them expire. --Arun Baheti
