I'll be connecting through LGA early next week and have a fairly tight connection with a terminal change at LGA. I read here recently that YYZ-NYC flights can have free same day standby, so, this will definitely be helpful if I can get on an earlier flight.

Question is what's the whole process? Am I able to put myself on the standby list when we OLCI as long as it's the same day (ex. midnight), or do we have to show up at the airport way early and standby for any earlier flights at check-in? At the gate of the earlier flight? Gate of my actual flight? CS desk?

Thanks!
In my experience, standby is done at the airport. The earlier you show up, the better of course because there are more flight options available. Doesn't have to be at the gate of your flight. You can do it outside security at the check in counters.
