I don't know about United.
Suggest you call United Customer Service and explain ... you maybe lucky that the 1 way will get cancelled and refunded fully without any charges.

On Delta by mistake I have booked 2 tickets on the same flight twice.
Calling in and explaining my situation made it easier for the CS agent to not only cancel but fully refund the fare on the cancelled ticket.
