Eurobonus Star Alliance upgrade

Hi all

In my search for ways to use my accumulated Eurobonus Points, one options seems particularly interesting to me, the upgrade option.
I make 2-3 long haul, mostly US trips a year, as my destination is usually not serviced by SAS. That's why I've been looking on the Star Alliance upgrade chart:

One problem arises instantly though. They will, for most parts, only let me upgrade a full fare economy ticket. This is the case with major EU-US carriers such as Lufthansa and United (most relevant to me). In order to qualify for an upgrade, I then have to buy an expensive Y or B class ticket - usually on par, or only slightly less expensive, than a semi-restricted business class ticket.

I know SAS don't have these restrictions, so I could just take the transcontinental leg with SAS and connect in the US to my final destination. But first of all it would be a pain in the a** to transfer in the US, and secondly, business class on SAS seems pretty low standard compared to other airlines.

Are there really no other options to be upgraded on Star Alliance with Eurobonus? Like in the airport or something? This seems so pointless.
