Delta doesn't care. They make millions from the unnecessary fees they charge. Every airline charges similar fees unless you reach an elite status where the fees are waived. If you refuse to fly DL because they won't make a special exception to the rules for you, you'll get similarly mad at another airline soon enough. And there won't be any airlines left after a few years.
Once in a while the airlines will make exceptions for people in truly extraordinary circumstances. Your circumstance is typical everyday stuff. Either pay or fly on your originally ticketed date.
