Can I ask whether an anniversary upgrade usually applies to a single sector of a trip, or to the entire round trip?

Earlier this year, I didn't even know I had hit my 14th Anniversary as MPC. My colleague and I were travelling to Brisbane in Y, and both of us got upgraded to J because of my anniversary upgrade. I did walk back to Y during the flight, and noticed that it was only ~60-70% full.

On the return trip from Melbourne to Hong Kong, I got upgraded once again (but, my colleague did not). I asked what this was for, and the agent said it was because of my MPC anniversary. I also walked to the back of the plane, and saw that the loading was again quite light.
