Family of Breast Cancer Survivor & Pink Campaign on Delta
On a flight last Friday from Cleveland to Atlanta, all the pilots, FAs and gate agents were all dressed in some part of their uniforms in 'pink' for Breast Cancer Survivor and Awareness month. It was something that seemed to be system wide for Delta.
The Senior FA made an announcement about Delta sponsoring this effort. The pilots had pink ties and handkerchiefs on.
During the snack service (it was a 1.5 hour flight) it was announced that anyone who wished to make a 'donation' to the cause (which was going to a specific charity that does research on Breast Cancer and helps patients undergoing chemo, radiation and families who are struggling with the disease), one of the FA would be passing through the cabin and collecting either cash or credit cards for donations and any donation, no matter how small, would be appreciated and a total would be announced at the end of the flight.
For such a short flight, as we were about to land, it was announced that some $ 230+ was collected and would be turned over upon landing to the Senior Ground Manager in Atlanta who was handling collecting the funds from all the Delta Flights that were participating in this venue. The same appeal was made on the short 40 minute flight to my home town that connected from Atlanta.
I believe all of this was because it is "Breast Cancer Awareness" month. Having an older sister who just completed treatment for breast cancer, I know that it was a very thoughtful appeal, at least to me, personally, because my sister's treatment involved the use of a trial medication that was developed out of research from the University of California in Berkley and it worked! This spared her from having to go through ravaging chemo and radiation and one year later she is healthy and back to her regular daily routine of day to day living. Were it not for experimental research and trials like this one, we would not know what would have happened.
So I think that an appeal like this and support from Delta's employees was certainly a very good gesture.
