I would avoid any connection in mainland china like PEK or PVG at all cost, since they are prone to long delays due to ATC not unless it is the first flight in the morning.

Also, have you checked CA's fare class to make sure it actually earn miles on UA ? There are actually very few fare classes earn 100% miles.
