Everybody is different, but if you asked me...
I would never book any longhaul in Y.
I would definitely upgrade, but not to the itinerary you're thinking of changing to. I would find a routing in J all the way, regardless of surcharges. If I can't find it, I would buy a revenue ticket or not go.
