It makes the whole process way more stressful than it needs to be while allowing others to constantly game the system.
It's pathetic the UA has thousands of posts on FT and other travel sites that discuss these IT issues openly and yet they can't fix them. We're not talking background patches not visible to the customers but major glitches that impact a major benefit for typically the more frequent and savvy customer.
Nothing worse then knowing the waitlist expires onto the standby list and you always wonder if one of the green check marks goes to the gamer.
+1. Life is too short to spend the 24 hours before my flight obsessing over whether I'm going to land the upgrade. And I've never felt good about cutting in front of others in lines.
