[Esp. Non-US but US Travelers as Well]: How Many Cards Are Ideal to Travel With?

I am only ask for the purposes to be safe of loss or theft. Don't care much now about various programs.

I ask especially non-US travelers because while the average European person has 1 credit card (paid for) the average US person has 10 (free). Maybe not, I am exaggerating, but you get the idea.

The main point is not the cards are prepaid, debit or credit cards. the main issue is the total number per issuing financial institution.

My ideal setup would be: 2x2 cards 2 cards from each from one financial institution. 2 on my person, 2 at hotel location. That is more than safe. Or 2 on my person, 1 at hotel, 1 only for online shopping and sending myself emergency Western Union funds, I would not have the physical card with me just stored the card info in a safe location (not on a piece of paper but in an encrypted file).

Bonus question: have you heard of a financial institution which issues 2 identical cards for your name? I can't remember. Maybe you can use 1 card in your name, 1 card in the name of a friend, relative. Yes, not exactly according to the rules but no one would care if you only used the card at your local supermarket. so what's different on an international trip?

Fact is banks are not really friendly of international travelers (esp. in Europe, you have to log in with SMS or token, quite uncomfortable if you don't have access to it abroad) but you still have to survive somehow, right? How would you achieve this 2+2 configuration (esp. non-american users with less free or cheap banking options, for Americans I guess it's much easier) or your other preferred configuration?
