I don’t know what’s normal but I mostly stay at HIX and one category of room hasn't been my experience. I much more often than not get upgraded to a suite, even on a rewards night. I carry a large point balance which I would guess might put me higher on the list when they determine in the morning who is going to get an upgrade.

Unless I’m going hiking in the desert I can do without the free water bottles.
