Oh, another couple of things...

If you're not using to driving in France, you may wish to remember the following:

  • France uses the standard European pictogram road signs. There are some pieces of additional information (e.g. reminders that you do not have priority) but you can almost always get the information from the sign. It's worth having a quick look over them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari...ean_road_signs
  • France has a system of default/non-default priority which is often very confusing to those not used to it. This means that, unless otherwise indicated, priority at an intersection is to traffic from the right. Now, it'll often be indicated, particularly in towns (by use of different crossing signs, yellow diamonds, road markings, yield signs, etc), but on smaller roads, but urban and rural, this can catch you out. Definitely worth reading up on the meanings of the different priority signs.
  • The concept of adhering to marked lanes can be somewhat fluid in busy traffic. Just go with it, and respect the space immediately in front of others. This applies more in Paris than province, IME.
  • You may need to get a 'disque bleu' for timed parking - a disc that shows when you arrived. I don't know how prevalent this is in Dijon.
  • Otherwise, they love sprawling, underground, public car parks in France. Be prepared for tight corners and screeching tyres!
  • Watch the line you go to on toll roads. Some may require chip&pin credit cards, and some automatic passes (which you don't get with a rental car). Safest to stick to the manned ones if you can (usually on the right).
  • Traffic circles ("rond-points") are increasingly popular with road planners. Priority is to the left on here - i.e. traffic already on the circle.
