There have been collisions before due to pilots heeding ATC over TCAS--which is why they're trained to ignore ATC and do exactly what TCAS says.
TCAS will instruct a climb or decend movement, not a turn left/right instruction. Large aircraft are very sluggish in lateral movement while quite responsive to vertical changes.
