At least France is a left hand drive / right hand traffic country, unlike the UK/Australia (for example). I'm self-taught when it comes to driving stick and it wasn't that bad. Missed some shifts and stalled a few times my first few times out, but pretty good thereafter. In my experience, the cheaper rental cars with stick shift tend to be much more forgiving. Once you go higher end, you tend to need to be much more precise in your shifts and in working that third pedal.
