I'm not sure where you're based, but is there any particular reason that you're considering buying a laptop in Singapore or Malaysia? I never shop for electronics in these places, only for food.
Regardless, it's hard to compete with sale prices in the U.S. For some reason, shipping China-made laptops across the Pacific Ocean makes them cost less, not more. (For example, Fry's Electronics had an ultralight laptop for sale yesterday for US$250.)
I'd take a look at the Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals coming up next month before buying anything. I personally have no aversion to a machine running Windows 7, but if you can find one, it will be an unsold/refurbished laptop on clearance.
