It would be different if the passenger has a tried-and-tested minicab firm they're personally comfortable with.
I suppose there are risks with black cabs as well (I think the last major incident involving a lady and a personal transport service in London was a black cab)
I tend to use minicabs on my own quite a lot and thankfully have had no problems.
There are firms that I tend to use for/around LHR: LHR Express Cars (01895 444333), CarFare (020 8897 1818), Fairway Kenwood (0207 723 9000 but I only tend to use FK within London or London to LHR as they are based in London).
I much prefer LHR Express Cars to CarFare though, as they tend to be more reliable and less prone to getting lost.
I find that the black cabs with a bad ankle is a painful experience due to aforementioned issues. I had a long-term ankle injury and I avoided them as much as I could while it was still a problem.
Is there still an Addison Lee arrangement at LHR by the way?

You can certainly book a minicab after you've landed. It will probably involve a bit of a wait if you leave it until you have collected your luggage though, although some firms will grizzle at you for calling them before you have collected your luggage because they might need to wait.
If you are concerned about using the minicab, I'd recommend leaving your details and which firm you have used with someone in case something goes wrong, but that's unlikely. Precautions are always a good idea, but it's probably worse on N9... Of course, if there is anyone heading in the same direction and seems sensible you could go with that person on N9.
