Guarulhos (location of the airport) is itself a city - the second largest in Sao Paulo state. There are quite a number of hotels, far cheaper than Sao Paulo hotels and very much geared to the airport and travellers. A day room should be easy to arrange.

Not much to see in Guarulhos, though . But sufficient activity to divert you for a few hours. And when it's time to get to the airport, it's only a couple of kilometres away.

Best to save Sao Paulo for a proper visit. It's worth it.
