Never been nailed but have had to"explain" why the computer showed multiple reservations when I checked in to pay my pet fee or at the gate when I want to change flights.

It seems that even after you cancel the unused reservation, there seems to be a "ghost" presence in the computer system. If you do double book and accept the risk, I would be sure to cancel the extra flights before checking in at the airport.
