You can try making a custom one-way connection by using the same dates in the depart and return boxes and the connecting airport. Then price it and often its the same cost or even cheaper!

I do think people are paranoid about not making published connections if the goal is to simply make the flight(s) as quickly as possible.

Stopping for food and/or being able to use a early boarding position number is a another story, that often happens to me!
