Even once gate assignments are made (sometimes the day before the flight and sometimes the day of), nothing is even remotely final under an aircraft is on the ground. If there's still an aircraft at your scheduled gate when your aircraft lands, it's delayed for a while and there's another gate free, WN will move you there.

"Usual" gates and "usually" on time are not of help when it's one flight on one specific day.
