If this works reliably, the + would be that it's always available (as long as there UR mall has 3 UR points for Staples.com purchases). The -'s are that you have to plan this as Staples takes quite a while to ship (I got the shipping notice 7 days after I purchased online), and the highest denomination is $500 (so you have to carry more cards for stays of a week or at more expensive properties).
Another data point on purchase of Marriott GCs through the Ultimate Rewards portal using a Chase card.
I purchased 3 x $500 GCs (total $1506 including shipping) on 10/8 and the UR points from use of portal posted on 10/16. 4518 UR points posted even though in October Staples.com is supposed to be 2x UR points and not 3x.
Lack of reliability in my favor is ok
