With young children, unless you can leave them home with family, you should definitely avoid long foreign travel. I kind of think 8 is about the right age for kids to start "travelling" (instead of "vacationing") but it differs from child to child. My eldest was a good traveler at 5, but that was unusual.
This has not been my experience.
Have two kids and have taken them on overseas holidays every year since they were babies. Now aged 12 & 10 they have enjoyed trips to Europe, USA and many trips throughout Asia.
Each trip has been a delight and a wonderful eye-opening learning experience for the kids.
Kids do not restrict you from enjoying a holiday!
