Edit: Southwest does have cheap flights - web only fare. Price is similar to United's charges (except that I won't be using any United airmiles)...hmmm, decisions..decisions..
Two considerations:

1. If you purchase a cash ticket on UA, you will earn UA miles (albeit, not many).

2. If you fly on Southwest, you can check two bags at no additional charge.
