Indeed it would go against the rules.......however so does renewing Gold/Silver members despite them not having the required number of tier points....a rule which BAEC breaks on occasions.
The OP seems to have made a genuine mistake. At least he didn't copy the wise guys who would book a redemption with zero tax/charges attached then cancel it online to keep alive their accounts....think BAEC have sussed that one out though.
