Being told, "Dunno, perhaps that one's free" is a far from a satisfactory answer. It wasn't these staff members were busy, they were just stood there watching us struggle. I was told this three times until I found one that appeared to be free. I did get a strange look from a non english speaking woman when she returned from the bathroom.
I think you have a valid complaint and would have expected the crew to survey the seats and then inform the 20 UD pax, 'you are in 45D, you are in 56F etc....
Sounds like some leadership was required.
