Have done this a few times in the past. I just add a note to say I don't need the accessible room and would prefer a standard one. If there is an email address for the hotel, then I follow-up there and ask them to change it.

Never had a problem with the above route to get switched to a standard room and allow someone who needs the room to have it made available to them.
