If he books using AA miles all the way through does that not addresses the issue of missed connections and interline baggage which were the concerns listed? He'd have to re-ticket which might be an issue, might not be, depends on status level.
No. 2 tickets is 2 tickets. There is no difference in protection regardless of which miles are utilised. If flight 1 is late and miss flight 2 , then down to what an agent will be prepared to do rather than the airline being required to rebook
To be assured of protection against delays, need to have it booked as a single ticketed itinerary
