Email was definitely legit and directly from United. I looked up the reservation by confirmation number and last name. The reservation comes up just fine. There is no FF# or mileage program entered - so this is probably a kettle.
I guess one possibility is that they entered my email address by mistake during the reservation process (although unlikely since it is pretty unique).
Have you recently talked to anyone at UA Reservations? Is there any chance that the particular agent who handled this reservation had been, most recently, talking to you and still had your e-mail address cached on whatever screen they were using?
This actually may be an issue that you should ask UA Customer Service to escalate to their software engineering team — there might be some subtle reservations-system bug that you could help them fix before it causes more widespread info-disclosure bugs for customers.
