If you book these types of fares regularly at the last minute, then it is worth noting that seats for Y fares are much more easily available for United premiers on Y fares as they book into a special fare class different from standard premier upgrades....
This is what has happened to me a couple times this year. Worse, as a PM, I go behind DMs who may have also purchased last minute expensive fares. (Despite ~130 flights and ~25k in MQD so far this year!) This is why I'd be fine with all UGs being doled out at the gate, or a day before the flight.
As for UA, thanks for the info. It just doesn't work for me. I live in ATL and am more concerned about schedule and convenience than UGs.
