My question: Leading up to my travel date, is it possible for Hilton to open up some rooms at standard prices a few days before the date? Is it worth it to keep checking the website for something like a "48hr sale"? Or, is it pretty much a "reserve as far in advance as possible" type of strategy these days?
Thanks.
If you really want to stay in the Downtown Hilton, then call the diamond desk and have them book a room for you (will not be BAR rates). Then keep checking to see if anything opens up. If there is a conference and a company has a large block booked they might not need all the rooms and release some a few days in advance... however hotels tend to oversell to protect themselves (then "walk" some folks if they remain overbooked).
Which one will occur is unknown, so protect yourself and grab a room with help from the diamond desk... then continue to check rates to see if they drop (if so, then cancel and rebook the room at the lower rate).
