The set that I rotate around in the UK are sometimes full a week or two out when I make my initial bookings, but I can often get a room at one of the ones I prefer on the day - sometimes just a few mins before the 4pm cut-off to cancel the other property.

This is presumably due to cancellations, and it seems to be released at the same rate as booking ahead. Sometimes a high priced room opens up, sometime a lower one. The latter suits me as I still usually get an upgrade to a nicer room as a Diamond and being known to the properties.
thats an interesting idea mate, im the same as you moving around the uk Hiltons........ may i ask which ones?, and are some more frequent than others?........with the london ones they seem to stay "fully booked" to me but maybe i dont check enough?.
