I don't think that whether you stop or change in SIN makes much difference to the hassle factor. You still have to gather everything up and take it with you, just as if you were changing. So I'd regard one stop as better than two stops.
Getting to NZ in PE is one of those trips on which CX's introduction of PE may change quite a lot for me. I'll have to give it a try.
