I was booked on DOH-ZRH last night in C. When I did on-line check-in the day before, it showed a B787. At the gate, I got a "we have changed your seat due to an equipment change." Of course I didn't know until I pulled up in the bus that the change was to an A320.
OK, QR sells flights to Europe on A320/A321, but you generally at least know what you're getting and can decide to purchase it or not. And of course aircraft swaps happen. But come on, a change to an A320 with regional biz seats on the same day (so no way to fly the day before or really consider another route), on an overnight flight, on a business route? Really poor judgment in my opinion. Not the actions of a "five-star" airline. I realize that it could have been a last-minute maintenance issue, but I kind of doubt it; probably an economic one, as Y looked to be over 50% empty even on the A320. (ETA: If I am not too lazy, I will research all of QR's 787 tail numbers and see if this craft was reployed or in fact was in the workshop.)
P.S. Of course everyone in the full biz cabin was grumbling, but the flight attendants didn't acknowledge the change, much less apologize. (Instead, the flight was literally ten minutes late arriving, and they gave their usual scripted, robotic, wholly insincere, "we sincerely apologize for the late arrival of this flight and any inconvenience that it may have caused."
