And I think the answer to the questions are:

-There is no way to "upgrade" any award ticket.

-And that ANY award ticket for ANY flyer is changeable for free.

-And that if the miles for an award ticket come from an EXP (even if used by a person without status), the miles can be put back in my account for no charge if there is a cancellation of the trip.
