Is it OK to unplug hotel phones?

When I arrive at hotel rooms the first thing I always do is unplug the in-room phone. This is on the ground that I hate being telephoned by the hotel with some topic or another, and also occasionally you receive phone calls from people who have misdialed etc. I just have no interest in hearing from the hotel about anything unless I've contacted them first.

Is there anything wrong with doing this? I have never had a problem until recently, when I stayed at a Hilton in Warwick and the hotel staff questioned it - stating that it is a requirement to keep the phone plugged in in case of emergencies(!).

What is the opinion of others about this? Is it OK to unplug the phone and leave Do Not Disturb on the door?
