AC has no right to do this to unsuspecting people. Just because we frequent FT and are knowledgeable about the rules, in's and out's, does not mean that the unsuspecting public is just as informed as we are.
I think this falls somewhere in a grey area.
As was mentioned, they were probably GTE'ed on a Tango fare and they didn't grab a seat ahead of time.
It sucks but I would be surprised if they were totally ignorant about the process.
