Not all United cards allow upgrading award tickets; you have to have the current Explorer, Club or Presidential cards. I keep a legacy UA Platinum card (which provides other benefits I value), and don't get to upgrade award tickets. The list of allowable cards is at the bottom of this page.

Five CPUs as a plat would be quite a feat.
