I don't think this will work.
If you have Silver status already, my understanding is you can't be gifted Gold. (Someone correct me here if this is wrong.)
Assuming the above is true, you'd have to wait until March 1, 2015 for your friend to gift you Gold status. Aside from you probably not wanting to remain Silver until then, his choice benefit will also expire on February 28, 2015 - before he can gift Gold to you anyway.
