If you connect in LHR vs. going nonstop, you pay $82.70 in extra taxes on a roundtrip with the same base fare, no matter what class you fly in. It's called the United Kingdom Passenger Service Charge (UB). Plus, of course, you're transiting in connecting-hell LHR, the only airport in the world that makes you queue twice on a connection.

The whole "connecting at LHR" is just fine thing is a widely held and incorrect belief. Thank you for clarifying hillrider. I also provided some hard data for folks in this post. Simply put, on an award ticket, if you care about how much you are spending, avoid transiting in LHR.

The UK has decided to do everything in its power to say "no thanks, we only want price insensitive, wealthy tourists."
