It's about 50 miles longer from the south rim of the Grand Canyon to Las Vegas than going back to Phoenix (no bridges across the Grand Canyon ).

One time I rented a car one-way from PHX to LAS because it was last minute and cheaper (just a 1 day rental), but it's a long boring drive. In hindsight, I should have flown. I recommend doing that.
