I find that in the majority of cases I have much better experiences staying at FS, Pen, MO, etc., and feel that I get better value at this type of a hotel even though I don't earn points. i feel that loyalty programs are incompatible with the way high-end hotels operate, and do not think earning a few points equates to good value.

I agree that high-end/luxury hotel chains should not have a points-based program (and IMO the Marriott-RC partnership somewhat devalued the RC experience), however a program offering more personalized service and a free night and/or room/suite upgrade certs (confirmable at time of booking) after x nights as a published benefit works fairly well IMO.
