It might not actually have anything to do with the cards not being a magnetic stripe card. My BarclayCard in the UK which is part of the global alliance had a message about that at the bottom of my recently issued statement "Interac, the Canadian ATM and debit network provider, is currently experiencing issues accepting some international cards. If your card is not accepted, we recommend you withdraw cash over the counter at any Scotiabank branch".
