OK, this worked for me at Muscat airport, arriving from Sharjah. I had a Dubai arrival stamp from some days before. The immigration chap seemed to enjoy the discussion`about whether or not I should go back to the visa counter, as I was arriving from UAE rather than from Dubai, but finally decided to be generous in his interpretation of regulations.
No idea if this works at land borders: the agents there seem to have quite different temperament to their airport brothers and sisters.
