If I understand correctly, I only get a stamp when entering/leaving foreign country. In Chicago and other cities you do get a stamp for customs clearance on the trip back to USA (sometimes).

Correct the US will not stamp it normally. I've been to Hawaii 10+ times and never showed a passport just a DL. I also checked my passport and could not find a US stamp but 20+ others.
