In either case, you can see from the text that it's the same thread as before, and it still appears in the thread index listing, so it doesn't seem likely that it was something deliberate to try to conceal the thread.
Normally when threads are merged the old thread numbers redirect to the new one. A recent example, a post was made about the video showing the aftermath of the 2000 hijacking. There was a thread posted by Sixth Freedom last year about it, so the newer thread was merged with his but the links to both threads still continued working.
I'm just a little miffed because I had links to the thread on my site, now I'm going to have to update them.
It will have broken links from any blogger who decided to link to that discussion.
