I kind of fell in love with Taiwan when I visited last year. I was there for a little over a week. I agree that the drive down the east coast is awesome.
I am headed back in a few weeks for about 10 days. It's interesting what tommy525 said about people who are seasoned travelers who have "done" Asia enjoying it there. I think that is certainly true in my case. I like to just "be" somewhere different. And there are plenty of interesting things in and around Taipei to do and see, but they may not be the traditional sorts of things that draw a lot of westerners.
I love Taipei's MRT system. It's clean, bright, CHEAP and efficient. It's also still rather new which helps. I am a big fan of public transportation in general and find the system to be quite easy to use. Easier than HK in my opinion.
I do think they could do more to attract eco-tourists and people into nature stuff. I would guess most people expect Taiwan to be one big factory and don't know about all of the green space, mountains, etc.
I love the people and the environment there. And people queue in an orderly fashion to get onto the MRT train!! You will never ever see that in Singapore or China. In China, it's a battle to see who gets in or get out of the train first.
